Prefácio
I am honoured to have been invited to address the
SEDES 2007 conference on Entrepreneurship in
Lisbon and to write this preface.
Twenty years ago, I was a criminal defence lawyer in
London. After working in that profession for 5 years I discovered I was doing a job that I didn’t particularly like. Dissatisfied with my career and life, I decided to change things, first by re-educating myself, and second by emigrating to New
Zealand, then Australia. I had suffered what American business author Michael
Gerber, describes in his excellent book, The ‘E-Myth’ as an ‘entrepreneurial seizure’! Today I have the privilege of consulting with and speaking to people in organisations around the globe, doing what I enjoy most and living in Australia, - a great part of the world.
I’m not unusual. There are thousands of people everyday who have ‘entrepreneurial seizures’. Not all of them succeed. But those that do see opportunity and are determined to succeed in the face of uncertainty.
In my adopted country of Australia, more and more people are interested in owning their own business. Government figures indicate that small businesses there make up 95% of
