Abstract
The central subject of this article is the study of the space and the fantastic one in the open books of Edgar Allan Poe, specifically of selected stories, “The Black Cat”, “The
Oval Portrait” and “William Wilson”. As many item had been studied in the Theory of
Literature, as time and plot, however, the study of the space on it, always was around, being of most importance for the literary agreement, like “what it allows a sign to be sign is not the time, but space” (FOUCAULT, 2000, p. 168). Although, this research appeared with the intention to increase the studies in this area, it tries to contributing for the academic enrichment in the scope of the research in literature. Not only, the space construction intervenes directly with the fantastic rank of the literary composition, the space enters in contact with the fantastic one to cause the hesitant and curiosity, turning the history more hesitates. Therefore, that is fantastic literature, the hesitation between the Real and the Imaginary is a constant subject in Edgar Allan Poe books. Poe is a writer of XIX century, his books is extensive, varying since stories novels and poems, its histories are recognized until today for its ingenuity, the pertinent subject of his books are fit in the sort of this research point, the fantastic. So, Edgar Allan Poe books was of great value for the proposal of this work, as if it can verify more ahead in details.
